1996-2008 saw the longest period of year-over-year decline in hospital transactions; however, hospital merger and acquisition activity has risen steadily since that time and early indicators point toward 2012 to be a strong year. Not only has the total number of hospitals exploring a partnership opportunity increased, but the size, scale, and types of entities participating in these transactions have seen an expansion. The ever-changing landscape of healthcare and potential regulatory drivers, such as ACOs, require hospitals to evaluate their overall business strategies and long-term plans to remain competitive in their market.
In the past, many hospitals looked to partnership strategies only in their most dire moment; however, many now look to strategic partnerships as a viable opportunity for growth and increased competitiveness. Whether the goal is to expand a physician group network, ancillaries and other alternate site providers, or to gain market share through the purchase of other entities, an M&A strategy is quickly becoming a vital long-term growth strategy that your entity must be aware of for future planning.
